Equine-Assisted Therapy Based on the Equine Somatic Pathways Method
Do you have a connection to animals, or have you wondered how animals can help with our mental health? Now is your chance to spend time with some awesome horses who will accept you into their herd, fill your heart with joy, and help you build confidence!
Is Equine Assisted Therapy Right for Me?
That’s completely up to you!
There’s no denying that horses can feel intimidating at first. They are large, powerful animals, and as prey animals their instinct, when startled, is to move away quickly. That said, much of that fear softens once you begin to understand how horses communicate.
Horses speak primarily through body language and nervous system states, whether they are feeling safe, relaxed, alert, or stressed. As you learn to recognize these cues, you develop the ability to tell when a horse is calm and open to connection, when it may need space to rest and regulate, or when it simply isn’t in a place for safe engagement that day.
Just like humans, horses are affected by their environment and experiences. Changes in weather, herd dynamics, and even conflict within the herd can create tension and lead to nervous system dysregulation. Part of the therapeutic process is learning to notice these shifts in the horse and in yourself and responding with awareness, respect, and care.
What Is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy?
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy is a collaborative, experiential approach to therapy that takes place in partnership with horses. Sessions are facilitated by Sarah Chouffot, a licensed mental health professional (with support from an equine specialist, when needed), and are designed to support emotional healing, personal growth, and self-awareness.
No riding experience is required. In fact, all sessions are ground-based and may include grooming, leading, observing, or engaging in structured activities with the horse.
How Does It Work?
Horses are highly attuned to body language, energy, and emotional states. Because they respond honestly and without judgment, they provide immediate feedback that can help you better understand your thoughts, emotions, and relational patterns.
During sessions, you may:
- Practice setting healthy boundaries
- Develop emotional regulation skills
- Build confidence and assertiveness
- Strengthen communication skills
- Explore trust and attachment patterns
- Increase mindfulness and present-moment awareness
During each activity, we take time to reflect and process the experience, connecting insights gained by interacting with the horses to everyday life situations.
Why Horses?
Horses are sensitive, intuitive animals that naturally respond to authenticity and congruence. They do not judge, diagnose, or label; they simply react to what they experience in the moment. This creates a powerful opportunity for you to:
- Increase self-awareness
- Develop emotional regulation
- Experience safe connection
- Practice new relational patterns
- Heal from trauma in a somatic (body-based) way
Working with horses often allows growth to occur in ways that feel more natural and less intimidating than traditional office-based talk therapy alone.
Who Can Benefit?
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy may be helpful for:
- Individuals experiencing anxiety or depression
- Trauma and PTSD recovery
- First responders
- Youth and adolescents
- Individuals navigating life transitions
- Those struggling with confidence, boundaries, or relationship challenges
- Those seeking connection when humans feel unsafe
- Those experiencing loss
A Collaborative, Ethical Approach
Our equine-assisted work follows established professional standards, based on the Equine Somatic Pathways Model, ensuring safety, professionalism, client-centred care, and respect towards the horses.
Sessions are tailored to your individual goals and comfort level. You are never required to do anything that feels unsafe or overwhelming!
How Do I Get Started?
If you’re interested in experiencing Equine-Assisted Therapy, we’ll begin with two sessions in my office first. This gives us the opportunity to get to know one another, start building trust, and explore your personal experiences and goals. It also helps me thoughtfully consider which horse (or horses) may best support your journey.
Because equine work is deeply relational, the connection we build together matters. Horses are incredibly intuitive and attuned to energy and intention. When they sense the safe, supportive relationship we’ve already begun to establish, they’re better able to connect with you in a meaningful and therapeutic way.
This foundation helps create a smoother, more grounded transition into working alongside the horses so you can feel supported every step of the way.
Additionally, we will discuss safety around horses, risks involved, and proper clothing to wear.
